How to avoid sample contamination from hormonal treatments?
For all customers, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of your test results is essential. Understanding the risks of contamination when collecting a finger prick blood sample is essential, as such risks can lead to inaccurate test outcomes. This presents a particular concern for individuals undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or taking other medications that can affect blood test results.
To address these concerns and minimise the risk of contamination, we offer the following guidance:
- Avoid Using Skin Creams, Gels, or Sprays Before Collecting Your Sample: Products applied to the skin can interfere with test results. Even a small residue of these substances on your skin can affect the accuracy of your blood test, as they might mix with the blood sample.
- Clean the Collection Area: Ensure the surface where you'll collect your sample is clean and dry. A clean environment reduces the risk of environmental contaminants affecting your sample. If possible, wipe down the area with a disinfectant before beginning the sample collection process.
- Proper Hand Washing: Before handling your sample collection kit, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This step is crucial, especially after touching potentially contaminated surfaces or objects. Proper hand hygiene is a fundamental preventive measure against sample contamination. After washing, dry your hands with a clean towel or let them air dry.
- Avoid Cross-Contamination: After sterilizing your finger and preparing to collect the blood sample, be careful not to touch the inside of the cap or the rim of the tube. Direct contact can introduce bacteria or other contaminants into the sample. This precaution helps maintain the sterility of the collection process.
Should your sample be reported as contaminated, leading to inaccurate or unreportable results, Vitall will offer a repeat test at no additional charge to ensure you can complete your health assessment without undue delay.
