pTau-181 Alzheimer’s Risk Test Kit
A specialist venous blood test for adults aged 55–80 with memory or thinking concerns.
When your memory or thinking feels different, it is natural to want clearer information about what to investigate next. This test measures pTau-181, a protein in the blood associated with the amyloid changes seen in Alzheimer’s disease.
Designed for adults aged 55–80 with cognitive concerns, the test can help a healthcare professional assess whether Alzheimer’s-related amyloid changes are unlikely to explain your symptoms. It cannot diagnose Alzheimer’s disease or predict whether you will develop it in the future.
Your sample is analysed using the Roche Elecsys® pTau181 assay in a UKAS-accredited laboratory, with secure digital results that you can share with your GP or specialist.
Only for professional collection. This test includes our Home Nurse Visit (Telephone Booking) service at no additional charge!
This service is intended for adults aged 55–80 with memory or thinking concerns. It is not a general screening test, including for people concerned only because of family history. Sudden confusion or a rapid change in mental state needs urgent medical help.
What the pTau-181 Alzheimer’s Risk test is for
The test measures phosphorylated tau at position 181, shortened to pTau-181, in the plasma portion of your blood. Tau is a protein normally found in nerve cells. When Alzheimer’s-related amyloid changes are present in the brain, pTau-181 levels in the blood can rise.
The Roche Elecsys® pTau181 assay is primarily designed as a rule-out test. A negative result makes Alzheimer’s-related amyloid changes less likely to explain your symptoms. A positive result does not diagnose Alzheimer’s disease and means that further clinical assessment may be needed.
The result is one part of a wider assessment. Your clinician should also consider your symptoms, medical history, medicines and any other investigations.

How this works ›Why take the pTau-181 Alzheimer’s Risk test?
Memory, concentration and thinking can change for many reasons. An objective biomarker result may help you and your clinician decide what to explore next.
Add biological context. Bring an objective laboratory result into the conversation about your symptoms.
Guide the next step. Help your clinician decide whether Alzheimer’s-related changes need further investigation or whether other explanations should be explored.
Access specialist testing. Begin with a professionally collected blood sample rather than a brain scan or lumbar puncture. Further tests may still be needed.
- are aged 55–80 and have noticed persistent changes in memory, concentration or thinking
- are already undergoing assessment and want additional information to help guide further investigation
- have discussed your concerns with a healthcare professional who considers biomarker testing appropriate
- want an objective laboratory result to discuss with your clinician

No. It is designed primarily to help rule out Alzheimer’s-related amyloid changes as one part of a wider assessment.
No. A negative result makes Alzheimer’s-related amyloid changes less likely to explain your symptoms, but it cannot completely exclude Alzheimer’s disease or other causes of cognitive change.
Laboratory analysis usually takes 2–5 days after your sample arrives. Allow additional time for sample collection, transport and results reporting.
No. It requires a venous blood sample collected by a trained nurse or phlebotomist.
A positive result does not diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Discuss it with your GP or specialist, who can decide whether further assessment, imaging or other tests are appropriate.
