What Is The Syphilis (IgG & IgM) Test For?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by an infection with bacteria known as Treponema pallidum.

Like other STIs, syphilis can be spread by any type of sexual contact. Syphilis can also be spread from an infected mother to the fetus during pregnancy or to the baby at the time of birth.

Syphilis can remain hidden in the latent phase with no symptoms for many years so you should get tested if you have been at risk.

How To Test Syphilis (IgG & IgM)

By buying a laboratory test kit with professional nurse or clinic collection, you can accurately measure Syphilis (IgG & IgM) for total reassurance.

Professional analysis in an accredited laboratory ensures rapid result delivery.

What if Syphilis (IgG & IgM) Results Are High?

IgG antibodies suggest past exposure to this infection. An IgG result alone does not indicate recovery, and it does not show whether there are ongoing complications.

IgM antibodies suggest an acute syphilis infection, meaning the infection has been acquired recently for the first time.

Past exposure shown by IgG antibodies does not confirm whether that exposure is related to any current symptoms, and further medical evaluation is commonly used to clarify the cause.

An IgM result suggesting an acute infection is generally treated as clinically significant and is often prioritised for early review.

What if Syphilis (IgG & IgM) Results Are Low?

Lack of IgG antibodies suggests no past exposure to this infection. An infection can still be present in the early (acute) stage before IgG antibodies have developed.

Lack of IgM antibodies suggests this infection is not currently an acute cause of symptoms.

Lack of both IgG and IgM antibodies generally indicates no evidence of past or recent infection on this antibody test. STI-type symptoms can still occur for other reasons and are often assessed through sexual health services.
