What if Serum Iron Results Are High?

High serum iron can be linked to a number of conditions, sometimes in the setting of inflammation or tissue damage.

Because raised iron can be associated with haemochromatosis, this finding is often reviewed further to clarify the cause.

A high iron level is usually interpreted alongside the full iron studies. It may be higher in some individuals due to iron supplementation, but other important associations include repeated blood transfusions or red blood cell disorders such as haemolytic anaemia.

What if Serum Iron Results Are Low?

Low serum iron can be a sign of iron deficiency anaemia, where the body has too little iron to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the body’s tissues.

Other possible causes include chronic disease, blood loss, and reduced iron absorption.

A low iron result is generally interpreted alongside other iron studies. Iron deficiency is often the most likely explanation, but the underlying reason (for example, ongoing blood loss) is considered important when clarifying the cause.

This finding is commonly reviewed further to identify the underlying cause.
