Prolactin Testing (PRL)
How to check your Prolactin levels with a home finger-prick blood test kit
What Is A Prolactin Test For?
A Prolactin test is also known as a luteotropic hormone or luteotropin test.
Prolactin (PRL) is a hormone normally present in low amounts in men and non-pregnant women.
In women higher levels inhibit the hormones that trigger ovulation and allow eggs to develop and mature.
In men its exact role is unclear but high levels can cause infertility, low sexual desire & erectile dysfunction.
Interestingly the levels of prolactin are regulated by the neurotransmitters which can also be influenced by moods and depression.

What If Prolactin Test Levels Are High?
High concentrations can be seen with a wide range of conditions, including pituitary gland disorders, hypothyroidism, anorexia or kidney disease.
In women this can also be caused by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Note that high levels of prolactin are normal during pregnancy and after childbirth while breastfeeding.
In men, high levels of prolactin can lead to lower sexual desire, decreased ability to have an erection (impotence) and infertility due to a reduced sperm count.
Further investigation is required to determine the cause and you should discuss with your G.P.
