Neisseria Gonorrhoeae - Urine Testing

A positive test indicates an active Gonorrhea infection.

Gonorrhea can be linked to longer-term health problems when left untreated. Gonorrhea infections can often be effectively treated with antibiotics. Treatment is commonly described as an injection of the antibiotic ceftriaxone into the buttocks, or azithromycin given orally, and symptoms often improve quickly after treatment.

Things to Know:

• A current sexual partner is typically treated for gonorrhea, irrespective of their screening result.
• Sexual contact is generally avoided until both partners have completed treatment.
• Previous sexual partners over the last 6 months are commonly informed of the diagnosis; local GUM clinics can provide assistance or advice on partner notification.

Further Testing

• Individuals with a confirmed gonorrhea diagnosis are often screened for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at least one week after completing treatment.
• Re-testing within 3 months of completing treatment is commonly discussed regardless of symptoms, to check that reinfection has not occurred; this is described as particularly important for those aged 25 and under.
