Here are some questions we often get about our Coronavirus antibody testing services.
Can I Check My Platelet Levels Before Taking a COVID-19 Vaccine?
If you want to measure your platelet levels then a Full Blood Count Test is the test required to do so. The platelet count is measured along with the mean platelet volume. Platelets are vital for ensuring correct blood clotting (coagulation) and the mean platelet volume (MPV) test measures their average size and is closely related to the platelet count.
All of the parameters detailed on the test page, including platelet count, will be measured and compared against normal ranges for your age and gender, so anything out-of range will be clearly highlighted on your results report.
Are These High Quality Coronavirus Antibody Tests?
Yes, very, or we wouldn't risk customer safety or put our reputation on the line and sell them.
Your sample will be analysed using an IgG & IgM antibody test from leading global manufacturer Roche.
This Coronavirus antibody test is CE marked and fully validated and accredited. This means the test is in compliance with the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC.
The Roche Coronavirus antibody test entered routine use in the NHS this year using venous samples. Vitall are now making it available to consumers as a finger-prick (capillary) blood test in partnership with TDL Pathology, part of the Sonic Healthcare Group.
TDL has perhaps the most extensive experience with finger-prick blood analysis in the UK. They provide a wide array of different tests in this format for Vitall, all well-proven and reliable. This is also where your samples for the Coronavirus antibody test will be analysed.
How Accurate Are Coronavirus Antibody Lab Test Kits?
Highly accurate, and we'll break this down as follows:
The sensitivity for this test using a finger-prick sample was verified to be 97.4%.
This means that for every 1000 people who had previously had a COVID-19 infection, 974 would be detected and 26 would return false-negative results.
So the results will be correct for nearly everyone who takes the test.
This test has been verified and shown to have 100% specificity with finger-prick samples. This means in the performance study there were no false positives from people with other respiratory illnesses, and who were not infected with SARS-COV-2.
Although there is a small chance of a false positive result, your positive result almost certainly results from a SARS-CoV-2 infection, not another virus or disease.
Overall, the results will be correct for nearly everyone who takes the test. Note that some people may recover from a COVID-19 infection without producing antibodies.
We ensure the highest clinical quality Coronavirus testing available by using UKAS accredited, CPA approved and ISO certified laboratories. This is the highest level of clinical accreditation in the UK. We achieve the same level of quality as trusted by NHS hospitals, private clinics & general practitioners.
By utilising over 30 years of testing experience we deliver maximum reassurance for all of our health tests.
Is This A Coronavirus Antibody Rapid-Test?
This test is analysed very quickly, but it is NOT a rapid-test! We'll explain:
Rapid-tests are the term typically used for single-use, disposable cartridge style tests for use often in your own home. The mostly widely known example being pregnancy tests.
Test quality is assessed by the Sensitivity, Specificity and resulting risk of false negative or false postive results. Rapid-test quality is rarely on-par with tests conducted in a quality controlled, audited and accredited laboratory environment, staffed by healthcare professionals and using professional diagnostics instrumentation.
Critically, the use of Coronavirus Antibody Rapid-Tests is currently NOT advised by Public Health England, as detailed here.
Our test, however, is a self-collected sample analysed in a professional clinical laboratory as described above.
Results will usually be available within 48 hours. We can't guarantee this but we work hard to deliver results quickly and efficiently. Occasionally results may take a little longer due to the complex nature of biological sample analysis.
When Should You Test For Antibodies to Coronavirus?
It's vital that you wait at least 14 days from the onset of symptoms, or from exposure to the virus.
This is because there is a 'window period' during which a process called seroconversion develops antibodies to reliably detectable levels.
Since many people experience few - or even no symptoms at all - from COVID-19 infection, you can still take this test if you have not had symptoms. Again, antibodies will only be detected if you were infected at least 14 days ago.
Note that people who are immunocompromised may take longer to develop antibodies to Coronavirus infections.
Does A Positive Test Mean I'm Immune To Coronavirus?
Until this is proven for certain it should be assumed that a positive result is not an indicator of immunity.
Research is still ongoing regarding this. It is anticipated that antibodies may confer some degree of immunity to the virus. But it is not clear by how much, or how long this might last.
If you've had a positive result you may also still be contagious. So it is important to continue to follow government guidelines regarding social distancing and other preventative measures.
Nevertheless, a positive result may give you peace of mind that your body has coped with a COVID-19 infection previously, presumably without requiring hospitalisation or ventilation.
How Long Ago Would A COVID-19 Infection Be Detected?
Antibodies persist in the body after a viral infection, however, longer-term antibody persistence studies for SARS-CoV-2 have not yet been concluded.
IgG antibodies have been shown to persist for several years for other similar viruses. So it is possible that SARS-CoV-2 antibodies stay in the blood for some time, but we cannot say for certain how long this is without the data to prove it.
What Medical Professionals Are Involved With My Antibody Test?
All Coronavirus Antibody test analysis is conducted entirely by trained biomedical scientists and other healthcare professionals in an accredited laboratory. As a medically-led laboratory, a team of up to 16 consultant doctors are responsible for laboratory clinical governance.
Once test analysis has been completed to these high standards, your results are processed and a personalised report created.
Your report clearly explains your test results in detail.
Who is a Home Coronavirus Antibody Test Suitable For?
Our home test kits are for those who want the convenience of home testing with the reassurance of professional clinical laboratory analysis.
Home Coronavirus Antibody Checks are advised if you:
- are over 18.
- have been exposed to the virus at least 14 days ago.
- started having symptoms at least 14 days ago.
- want to establish if you have had the virus.
