Chlamydia Trachomatis - Throat Testing

A positive test indicates an active chlamydia infection.

Chlamydia infections can usually be effectively treated with antibiotics. More than 95% of people are cured when antibiotics are taken correctly.

The two most commonly prescribed antibiotics for chlamydia are:

• Doxycycline – often used as a first-line treatment for chlamydia. It is sometimes used for people who have a lower tolerance for antibiotics. It is commonly given in smaller amounts over a longer period of time, which can reduce the risk of side effects.
• Azithromycin – often used when doxycycline is not suitable. It is considered a convenient option because it can be given in high doses and can cure infections in as few as two doses.

Obtaining Treatment:

Treatment is often arranged soon after a positive result, and may be provided through a GP or a local GUM clinic.

Things You Should Know:

• Current sexual partners are commonly treated for chlamydia regardless of their screening result.
• Sexual contact is often avoided until all partners have completed treatment.
• Previous sexual partners from the last 6 months are commonly informed, and GUM clinics can provide support with partner notification.

Further Testing

• People with a confirmed chlamydia diagnosis are often screened for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at least one week after completing treatment.
• Re-testing is commonly done within 3 months of completing treatment, even when symptoms are not present, to check for reinfection. This is considered particularly important for those aged 25 and under.
