How to check your Platelet Count levels with a home finger-prick blood test kit
What Is A Platelet Count Test For?
A Platelet Count test is also known as a Thrombocyte Count test.
A platelet count checks that your platelets - tiny particles responsible for wound clotting - are present in normal quantities.
Platelets are vital for ensuring correct blood clotting (coagulation) following injury by helping to seal blood vessels.

What If Platelet Count Test Levels Are High?
A high platelet count is due to overproduction of platelets by the bone marrow. This can be due to certain bone marrow disorders or might simply be a side-effect of another condition. These include many infections, inflammatory processes or following recent trauma.
Although in some people there may be no clinical signs or symptoms, there are risks associated with having abnormally high platelet counts, including blood clots and risk of bleeding.
Further blood testing and consultation with your doctor is required to determine the cause.
What If Platelet Count Test Levels Are Low?
A low platelet count is known as thrombocytopenia. This may be caused either because the bone marrow is not producing enough platelets, or the bone marrow is producing normal amounts but the platelets are being used or destroyed faster than they should in the blood.
A number of conditions can cause a low platelet count including but not limited to immune conditions, several infections and viruses, bone marrow disorders, chronic bleeding or drugs and medication.
Further blood testing and consultation with your doctor is required to determine the cause.
